MS- DOS, the road to success
In the late 70′s the most widespread operating system for personal computers was CP / M, developed by Gary Kildall. CP / M could run code of the Intel 8080 (8 bits), who had come on the market in 1974.

The emergence of the Intel 8086 (16 bit) operating systems necessitated new. For one thing Gary Kildall (Digital Research) was working on the development of CP / M (CP/M-86) and Tim Paterson (Seattle Computer Products, SPC ) developed the 86 operating system – DOS , also known as QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System).

For its part IBM wanted to market a personal computer based on Intel 8086, but without investing in the development of an operating system. The candidate then was CP/M-86, though it was long overdue.

In 1975, Bill Gates and Paul Allen had developed an interpreter BASIC for the computer Altair , (manufactured by Micro Instrumentation Telemetry Systems ( MITS ) and based on the Intel 8080). Microsoft, which was working with IBM to develop a BASIC , knew about the problem of CP/M-86.

Then acquired the rights to the commercial exploitation of 86 – DOS to SPC and negotiated in secret, hiding the source of the operating system to IBM , which eventually opted for the product offered by Microsoft. He finally bought SPC operating system and hired Tim Paterson.

The big play of Bill Gates was to convince IBM to Microsoft retain the rights to market the operating system and sell licenses only . This enabled the system to be sold in the IBM under the name PC- DOS , and Microsoft provided the same system to other manufacturers under the name MS- DOS .

In August 1981, was released on IBM PC with an Intel 8088, 256 KB of RAM , 160 KB floppy disk and PC- DOS (MS- DOS 1.0). The different versions were appearing to adapt to advances in hardware. The last one was 8.0, as part of Windows Me.

Some milestones in the evolution of MS- DOS

MS- DOS 1.0 was the 86 – DOS with some modifications. Was compatible with CP / M, file system using FAT ( File Allocation Table ), drove 160 KB floppy disks, processed batch files (. BAT) and require 12 KB of RAM . Support for double-sided discs did not arrive until the MS- DOS 1.1, 1982.

MS- DOS 2.0 increased to 32 MB in size supported hard drives. He added the disk partitioning. With this release, which multiplied by five the number of lines of code on the first, appeared the file config.sys and spool print.

In the series 3.0 (1984), doubled the lines of code, passing 40,000. With it came the virtual disk in RAM . With version 3.1 appeared on network support . With the 3.2 and 3.5-inch disks handled. It took until 1987 to see version 3.3.

Version 4.0 appeared in 1988, with support for 2 GB partitions . We also saw in MS- DOS 4.0 for the first time DOS Shell , a graphical file manager.

MS- DOS 5.0 came in 1991. Here the system was something else, available extended memory manager and permitted load drivers into high memory. With this release came two new commands useful: unformat and undelete to retrieve information, and the editor EDIT .

MS- DOS 6.0 (1993) ran better memory, joined compression ( DoubleSpace ), and disk defragmentation. DoubleSpace (DriveSpace named later), gave many problems, both technical and legal .

The first were resolved in version 6.2 of the same year. When Microsoft lost the lawsuit against Stac Electronics patent violation in using DoubleSpace , created his own compression utility in version 6.22 (1994).

According to sources, it is estimated that in 1996 Microsoft had sold between 180 and 190 million copies of MS- DOS , both licenses IBM (PC- DOS ), such as those of other manufacturers. MS- DOS 7.0 came with Windows 95 and the latest version 8.0 with Windows Me.

The first contact with MS- DOS … a disaster
